Tip the Scale in Your Favor with an Awesome Job Phone Interview

You might be thinking it's much better to land a job interview in person than to merely speak to an office assistant on the phone. You could be right. But you might be wrong! Here's why:

Today, busy executives do not have time to see in person every individual who applies for a job in his or her company. Some are doing what is called a 'phone screening.' This means they weed out the people that are unqualified, unappealing, or unattractive in terms of education and experience. After going through a list of people by phone they can then narrow down the search and invite only the 'cream of the crop' into the office.

Therefore, it's essential that you come across on the phone as a person they cannot possibly bypass. If you show potential on the phone you're more likely to be interviewed in person, even if the job is a 'virtual' one, where you'll perform your duties at home. Also, phone interviews are less expensive and timesaving for the company. And everyone seems to be cost-conscious in this tough economy.

A printed or digital resume can only do so much. The next step after a hiring manager receives such a document is making a follow-up phone call. If the job applicant wins favor there, then he or she can expect to be invited into the office in person.

Phone Interview Perks

One advantage of a phone interview over an in-person interview is the opportunity to focus on the questions and answers without interruption or distraction. You don't have to worry about how you look or what outfit to wear—unless the hiring manager is contacting you on SKYPE where you can be seen. But even then it's usually just face sharing. You don't have to be dressed to the nines.

While on the phone you can easily refer to your notes, which you can have spread out on the desk or table in front of you. That makes it easy to refer to them as needed.

Among your notes, be sure to have plenty of information about the company and its goals and mission. Find out its purpose and how your talents and experience can help management reach its objective.

Make it a point, ahead of time, to contact people you know who work for the company—if that's possible—and ask them some of your questions in order to get a good perspective on the organization and on the job you're vying for. Keep in mind that the more informed you are the better you will sound to the hiring manager. You may even find out things that others are unaware of. And that can work in your favor, as well.

When the phone interview is over, follow it up with a short personal note of appreciation and tuck in your current business card. Assure the person you spoke with that you are grateful for the chance to have asked and answered questions and you'd be pleased to come to the office for an in-person meeting if that would be possible.

Express yourself with enthusiasm and willingness and you may be one to receive a second invitation for an in-person interview for the very job you want and are suited for.
